It would be a challenge for any marketer: talk to a full room about your work, but keep it under seven minutes.

That’s a challenge Nathan Winstanley, president and founder of Winstanley Partners, a marketing and creative agency in Lenox, Mass., has chosen to take on as one of the scheduled speakers at the Berkshire Museum’s third Pecha Kucha Night on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
Literally, Pecha Kucha is Japanese for ‘chit chat.’ In 2003, Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo’s Klein-Dytham Architecture introduced the term as a presentation methodology in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each (six minutes, 40 seconds total).

The format, sometimes referred to as 20×20, guides multiple-speaker events called Pecha Kucha Nights, allowing individuals working in creative fields to meet, show their work, and exchange ideas. As of June 2012, the events had been held in 534 cities worldwide.

For his presentation, Winstanley will discuss some of the agency’s more creative pursuits during its 26 years in business, whether the idea soared to the skies or landed with a thud on the cutting room floor.

“Our favorite campaigns are not always those that the client chooses, or that do well in the public eye,” he says, “and a lot of times the best part of the story remains unknown – until now, that is.”

The Pittsfield-based event is the only Pecha Kucha Night in western Massachusetts, held four times a year at Berkshire Museum. This month, ‘Pecha Kucha Pittsfield’ is being held in conjunction with the 4th annual WordXWord Festival, celebrating all things written, spoken, and sung.

Tickets to attend the event tickets are $5, and Berkshire Museum members may attend for free. There will be snacks and free beer donated by Wandering Star Craft Brewery; donations will be accepted to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Tickets are available in advance by calling 413.443.7171, ext.10, or by visiting the museum.
