Balderdash Wine Cellar’s Premiere Vintage Takes Design Honors

Balderdash Cellars of Pittsfield and Winstanley Partners of Lenox, Mass. have been honored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) in the sales promotion category for the wine labels on Balderdash Cellar’s premiere bottling, Giraffa Chardonnay.

Balderdash Cellars’ owners, Christian and Donna Hanson, explained that the name and design were inspired by a childhood toy once owned and loved by Christian. The bottles front label features a bright red giraffe and is the first wine in a series of “wicked wines and tall tales.”

“Our emphasis has always been on telling a story, and usually a family one,” he said. “We were also looking to create a look that was whimsical but sophisticated and told as much about the wine as it did our point-of-view.”

Hanson added that the Berkshire-based winery uses California grapes and will be introducing several more wines throughout the year, each with their tall tale to tell.

The AAF, a not-for-profit industry association, is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It’s the country’s leading trade association for the advertising industry, and conducts the ADDY® Awards through its 200 advertising clubs and 15 districts nationwide, receiving more than 60,000 entries annually.
